Grape Varieties and Vineyards
The right grape variety thrives in the right soil.
Tradition Meets Innovation – Our Diversity of Grape Varieties
Modern winemaking, traditional grape varieties and innovative wine concepts: At Weingut Volker Barth in Rheinhessen, we combine more than 300 years of winemaking tradition, dating back to 1725, with modern cellar techniques.
Our vineyards extend across eleven municipalities in Rheinhessen, offering an exceptional diversity of soils and ideal growing conditions for a wide range of grape varieties.
Alongside well-known varieties such as Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Dornfelder, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay, we also cultivate lesser-known traditional varieties including Müller-Thurgau, Faberrebe, Huxelrebe, Bacchus, Ortega, Scheurebe, Portugieser, Silvaner and Yellow Muscat.
Innovation also plays an important role in our future. With our fungus-resistant grape varieties (PIWI), Regent and Souvignier Gris, we embrace innovative and resource-conscious vineyard management.
Our philosophy: Preserving Rheinhessen’s rich diversity, embracing new ideas and producing distinctive wines with individual character.
Eleven Villages – Diverse Soils – Distinctive Wines
Our vineyards extend across eleven villages in Rheinhessen and are characterized by an exceptional diversity of soil types.
From light sandy soils to medium and heavy loam soils, our different vineyard sites provide ideal growing conditions for a wide range of grape varieties and individual wine styles.
While lighter soils often produce delicate, elegant wines, heavier loam soils can contribute to particularly powerful, full-bodied wines.
This diversity of soils and vineyard sites allows us to bring out the unique characteristics of each grape variety and create wines with a distinctive personality.
